May 1 through May 7, 2011: Water Quality Awareness Week

WHEREAS, with nearly 40,000 square miles of Great Lakes, 36,000 miles of rivers and streams and more than 11,000 inland lakes, Michigan is abundantly blessed with the essential resource of water; and,

WHEREAS, water is a basic need upon which our health, comfort and standard of living depend, therefore it is crucial to protect and preserve the quality of water in our state; and,

WHEREAS, an action as simple as conserving the amount of water one uses is just one example of the steps citizens can take to help sustain water in Michigan; and,

WHEREAS, during this week, we join with the Michigan Section of the American Water Works Association and the Michigan Water Environment Association to remind citizens of this important natural resource our state possesses, and to encourage the people of this state to learn about local water issues and determine how they can play a role in protecting Michigan's water;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 1 through May 7, 2011 as Water Quality Awareness Week in Michigan.
