May 19 through May 25, 2012: Michigan Safe Boating Week

WHEREAS, surrounded by the Great Lakes, Michigan's beaches and waters attract millions of citizens and visitors each year for activities, including swimming, fishing, water-skiing and boating; maintaining the safety of all people on Michigan waters is of utmost importance; and,


WHEREAS, boating accidents can occur on smooth or turbulent waters, and it does not matter if the boater is an amateur or an expert; and,


WHEREAS, in Michigan, the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Department of Natural Resources offer safe boating courses, vessel safety checks, marine safety and search and rescue activities to encourage safe boating practices; and,


WHEREAS, during this week, we urge all citizens and boaters in the Great Lakes State to help keep Michigan waters safe and fun by making boating safety the first priority, and to always wear a life jacket while on board;


NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Saturday, May 19 through Friday, May 25, 2012 as Michigan Safe Boating Week.
