WHEREAS, Pi is a mathematical constant for the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter and is an infinite number, often limited to 3.14; with the help of technology, Pi has been calculated to more than 1 trillion non-repeating digits; and,
WHEREAS, studies show that students taking four years of math courses, including Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and one higher-level course are more likely to succeed in college, and in the workplace as well; and,
WHEREAS, math and science play fundamental roles in food and agriculture career tracks such as large animal veterinary medicine, epidemiology, food safety, microbiology and more; and,
WHEREAS, on this day, we join with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to encourage students to learn about Pi and to honor Michigan farmers by enjoying a piece of Pure Michigan pie;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Thursday, March 14, 2013 as Pi and Pie Day in Michigan.
