April 26 through April 28, 2013: Global Youth Service Days

WHEREAS, Global Youth Service Days celebrate and mobilize children and youth who improve their communities each day of the year through community service and service-learning; and,

WHEREAS, community service and service-learning provide opportunities for young people in our state to apply their knowledge, skills, creativity, abilities and unique perspectives to improve Michigan communities, and become active citizens and community leaders; and,

WHEREAS, proven to increase academic achievement, workforce readiness and social and emotional skills, community service and service-learning engage young people by broadening awareness of the communities they live in; and,

WHEREAS, Global Youth Service Days, the largest service event in the world, are being observed in all 50 states and more than 100 countries; this event provides an opportunity for schools, community organizations, faith-based organizations, government agencies, businesses and families to engage youth as leaders and problem solvers; and,

WHEREAS, during these days, we join with Youth Service of America and the Michigan Community Service Commission to encourage all Michiganders to engage in and serve their communities; we also recognize the youth in our state already committed to community service;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Friday, April 26 through Sunday, April 28, 2013 as Global Youth Service Days in Michigan.
