WHEREAS, recent student housing fires in Michigan and several other states across the country have tragically cut short the lives of some of the youth of our state and nation; and,
WHEREAS, university housing fires peak in September and October with an estimated 3,800 university housing fires occurring each year around the country, and with more than 85 percent of fire-related deaths occurring in off-campus housing where the majority of students live; and,
WHEREAS, many off-campus housing, Greek housing and residence halls are either not adequately protected with automatic fire sprinkler systems, alarm systems or adequate smoke alarms that provide early warning to get out and stay out, or such alarms are often disabled by the students, and,
WHEREAS, it is recognized that fire safety education of our college students is vital in reducing the occurrence of fires and the resulting loss of life and property damage; and,
WHEREAS, during this month we continue to raise awareness of the fire risks on- and off- campus; encourage Michigan universities and colleges to offer fire safety and prevention programs; and urge young adults to know, practice and take the preventive fire safety measures that could save their lives, and
NOW THEREFORE, be it Resolved, that I, Rick Snyder, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the month of September 2013 as Campus Fire Safety Month in Michigan.
