WHEREAS, each year the Michigan pork industry contributes more than $900 million dollars to the economy; and
WHEREAS, Michigan currently ranks 13th amongst all the states in pork production and produces 2.5 percent of all pork in the United States; and
WHEREAS, great strides have been made in the pork industry through innovative advancements in production and management, resulting in an economical and nutritious product for today's consumers; and
WHEREAS, the Michigan Pork Producers Association is recognized for their support in research advancing the quality of pork production and products, educating the public on issues affecting the pork industry, and promoting pork in all markets; and,
WHEREAS, the Michigan Pork Producers Association provides leadership to all those in agriculture as true stewards of the land, striving to preserve those resources they rely on for their livelihood.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Rick Snyder, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby declare October 2013 as Michigan Pork Month.
