November, 2014: Respiratory Care Awareness Month

WHEREAS, Lung diseases, known collectively as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), are the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and cost the economy an estimated $31.9 billion annually; and,

WHEREAS, The goal of Respiratory Care Week is to recognize and thank respiratory care professionals, promote respiratory health, increase awareness of respiratory health issues in all environments, and educate and encourage prospective students about career opportunities and growth of the profession; and,

WHEREAS, Millions of Michigan residents suffer from some type of lung disease which is why respiratory therapists are dedicated to providing information and administering tests to prevent or slow the spread of lung disease; and,

WHEREAS, During the month of November 2014, respiratory therapists, pulmonologists, health care advocates, and other professionals from around the State of Michigan will be raising awareness of respiratory health issues through special screenings and other activities;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 2014 as Respiratory Care Awareness Month.
