WHEREAS, since 2002, January has been set aside as National Mentoring Month in order to highlight mentoring as a positive impact it has on young lives; and,
WHEREAS, each year, more than 1,100 Foster Grandparents volunteer in Michigan, contributing approximately 1,000,000 hours of service to children with special or unique needs, helping them overcome various educational and life skill challenges; and,
WHEREAS, Foster Grandparent programs provide adults age 55 and older and on a limited income the opportunity to engage in challenging and meaningful volunteer service; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan is home to 19 Foster Grandparent programs that are making a difference in 59 counties throughout the state; and,
WHEREAS, on this day, we join with the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging to recognize the positive impact of Michigan’s Foster Grandparents; their nurturing, mentoring and overall efforts have contributed greatly to the lives of many children, and have helped strengthen our communities.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Thursday, January 22, 2015, as Foster Grandparent Volunteer Day in Michigan.
