WHEREAS, the state of Michigan is pleased to join Lithuanian-Americans throughout Michigan in recognizing February 16, 2015 as Lithuanian Independence Day; and,
WHEREAS, 97 years ago, on February 16, 1918, the restoration of an independent state of Lithuania, governed by democratic principles, was proclaimed with the signing of the Act of February 16; and,
WHEREAS, in search of new and better life, approximately 1.6 million Lithuanians arrived on American shores in the late 1800s and early 1900s; by 1920, about one-third of newly immigrated Lithuanians lived in Michigan, working in the state’s mining and manufacturing industries; and,
WHEREAS, still today, Michigan’s Lithuanian-American citizens continue to contribute greatly to the rich heritage and culture fostered in our great state;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Sunday, February 16, 2015 as Lithuanian Independence Day in Michigan.
