March 9-13, 2015: AmeriCorps Week

WHEREAS, service to others is a hallmark of the American character, and throughout our nation's history, citizens have stepped up to meet challenges by volunteering within their communities; and,

WHEREAS, since its creation in 1994, the AmeriCorps national service program has proven to be a highly effective way to engage Americans of all ages and backgrounds in meeting a wide range of community needs and promoting the importance of service and volunteering; and,

WHEREAS, AmeriCorps has strengthened America's independent sector by investing more than

$7 billion to support the efforts of tens of thousands of nonprofit, community, educational and faith-based community groups nationwide; those grants have leveraged hundreds of millions of dollars in additional funds and in-kind donations from other sources; and,

WHEREAS, more than 26,000 Michigan residents have served as AmeriCorps members, including AmeriCorps VISTA, AmeriCorps National and AmeriCorps NCCC, providing our state in excess of 37 million hours of service; and,

WHEREAS, on average, each AmeriCorps member recruits an additional 15 volunteers to help address the needs in their communities; members will recruit an estimated 16,000 additional volunteers in Michigan during the 2014-15 service year; and,

WHEREAS, AmeriCorps members throughout Michigan will, in return for their year of service, earn more than $3.9 million in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards to further their own educational advancement at colleges and universities; and,

WHEREAS, during this week, we join with the Michigan Community Service Commission to recognize the many contributions of AmeriCorps members and thank them for their dedication and service to communities throughout our state and nation;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 9 through March 13, 2015, as AmeriCorps Week in Michigan.
