May, 2015: Arthritis Awareness Month

WHEREAS, Arthritis is a complex family of musculoskeletal disorders consisting of more than 100 different diseases or conditions affecting joints, the surrounding tissues and connective tissues; and,

WHEREAS, Arthritis can cause severe pain, immobility, joint destruction, total disability, blindness, organ damage, organ failure and even death; and,

WHEREAS, Few understand that arthritis affects people of any age, race and gender; and,

WHEREAS, Arthritis is the nation’s most common cause of disability; and,

WHEREAS, 52.5 million Americans have been diagnosed with arthritis, including 300,000 children; and,

WHEREAS, 31% of the population of MI age 18 and older reported doctor-diagnosed arthritis; and,

WHEREAS, The Arthritis Foundation is focused on finding a cure and championing the fight against arthritis with life-changing information, advocacy, science and community; and,

WHEREAS, The Arthritis Foundation charts the course for the arthritis community, helping families develop personalized plans for saying yes — day after day; and,

WHEREAS, The Arthritis Foundation is committed to raising awareness and reducing the unacceptable impact of arthritis, which strikes 2.4 million adults and over 10,000 children in MI;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May, 2015 as Arthritis Awareness Month in Michigan.
