May, 2015: Commuter Challenge Month

WHEREAS, health and physical fitness, air quality, and responsible energy consumption are all important aspects to maintaining a high quality of life for Michigan residents; and,

WHEREAS, bicycle and pedestrian travel promote health and fitness and empower those without access to private automobiles; and,

WHEREAS, using alternate modes of transportation, including telecommuting, can reduce stress and save money; and,

WHEREAS, the highest levels of ozone pollution for the state of Michigan occur during the months of May through September; and,

WHEREAS, green commuting options include taking the bus or rail, carpooling, vanpooling, cycling, walking or telecommuting to work; and,

WHEREAS, one bus with 35 passengers eliminates a line of moving automobiles stretching six blocks; and,

WHEREAS, during this month, we encourage Michiganders to try an alternative mode of transportation, reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, reduce stress and save money;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2015 as Commuter Challenge Month in Michigan.
