October 17, 2015: Shake Your Mailbox Day

WHEREAS, Each year, nearly 100 people are killed in accidents involving rural mailboxes, and many others become permanently injured when mailboxes and their supports penetrate a vehicle’s windshield during an accident; and,

WHEREAS, Established in 2009, Shake Your Mailbox Day is an opportunity for residents across Michigan to take proactive steps toward ensuring their mailbox is safely and properly maintained prior to the start of winter maintenance operations on Michigan roads; and,

WHEREAS, Residents can prepare their mailboxes for winter by tightening screws and firmly verifying the post and receptacle are secure enough to endure large amounts of thrown snow; and,

WHEREAS, On this day, we join with state and local road agencies throughout Michigan and the United States Postal Service to encourage citizens to ensure their mailboxes are properly maintained prior to the onset of winter;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim Saturday, October 17, 2015 as Shake Your Mailbox Day in Michigan.
