October 2015: Weatherization Month

WHEREAS, the Weatherization Assistance Program provides an economic boost for low-income individuals through lower energy costs and reduced arrearages, thus assuring less dependency on public assistance; and,  

WHEREAS, Combined savings for energy and non-energy benefits show weatherization returns $2.51 for every $1 invested; and, 

WHEREAS, the average American family spends more than $1,300 annually on utility bills, which represents between 20 percent and 40 percent of a low-income family's income and is steadily rising; and, 

WHEREAS, the Weatherization Assistance Program, using federal, state, local, and private dollars, benefits households and communities across the nation by providing cost-effective, energy-efficient retrofits to homes occupied by eligible, low-income Americans; and,

WHEREAS, the average energy cost savings for each home weatherized is more than $300 annually, allowing families to spend these energy savings dollars on necessities such as groceries, medical bills, and other needs, thereby making them more self-sufficient; and, 

WHEREAS, carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by an average of one ton per weatherized household, reducing pollution levels here in Michigan by an average of 2,297 tons annually for the past three years; and, 

WHEREAS, the Weatherization Assistance Program provides an economic boost for communities by providing employment opportunities and improved energy efficient housing stock and neighborhood conditions;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 2015 as Weatherization Month in Michigan.
