WHEREAS, the dairy industry is one of the largest agricultural industries in Michigan and makes an estimated $14.7 billion impact to the state’s economy each year; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan dairy herds produce approximately 10.25 billion pounds of milk each year, making our state 6th in the nation in annual milk production, representing five percent of the total U.S. production; and,
WHEREAS, the average Michigan cow produces approximately 25,130 pounds of milk each year. That’s equivalent to 2,922 gallons of milk a year; and,
WHEREAS, National Dairy Month was created in 1939 and continues to offer us an opportunity to recognize the important health benefits and valuable nutrients provided by milk and dairy foods; and,
WHEREAS, National Dairy Month helps encourage Americans to reduce risks of osteoporosis, high blood pressure, obesity, and colon cancer through consumption of dairy foods. It is estimated that most Americans are not getting enough calcium from their diets, and are thus not benefiting from optimal calcium absorption and nutrition; and,
WHEREAS, June is a great time to remember the recommendation to get three servings of dairy daily – not only milk, but also cheese and yogurt, since these foods are also valuable and tasty sources of essential nutrients;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 15, 2016 as Michigan Dairy Day.
