WHEREAS, jazz music, which began in the United States, has had a positive impact on American culture; and,
WHEREAS, the 2017 University of Michigan Jazz Festival attracts the finest high school and collegiate students in Michigan and the surrounding states to the University of Michigan; and,
WHEREAS, the festival also offers the opportunity during Black History Month to celebrate the memory and contributions of a great American artist, Lionel Hampton, with a live concert by Gary Burton, the University of Michigan Jazz Ensemble and the Bicentennial Jazz Orchestra; and,
WHEREAS, the University of Michigan, through its jazz faculty, has a unique relationship with the world of jazz; and,
WHEREAS, the University of Michigan, Department of Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation has communicated this legacy to students throughout the state of Michigan;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim February 11, 2017 as Lionel Hampton Day in Michigan.
