WHEREAS, problem gambling is a public health issue affecting millions of Americans of all ages, races, and ethnic backgrounds, creating a significant societal and economic cost. According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, any gambling behavior that interferes with psychological, physical, social or vocational aspects of life is defined as problem gambling; and,
WHEREAS, numerous individuals, professionals and organizations are dedicated to educating citizens about problem gambling, and the availability and effectiveness of treatment; and,
WHEREAS, the Michigan Department of Community Health's Bureau of Substance Abuse and Addiction Services invites and encourages all Michigan residents to participate in Problem Gambling Awareness Week by sharing treatment information about this issue and supporting those who are in treatment and recovery;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim March 5-11, 2017 as Problem Gambling Awareness Week in Michigan.
