WHEREAS, agriculture is the second largest industry in the state of Michigan, and floriculture is the fourth largest commodity and the largest specialty crop; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan is a national leader in the production of floriculture products, only behind California and Florida; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan’s over 450 commercial growers distribute a wholesale value of over $405 million; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan’s floriculture industry employs over 7,000 workers in the industry; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan’s floriculture industry ranks number one nationally in sales of Impatiens, Begonias, Geraniums, Petunias, potted Hostas and potted Easter Lilies. Michigan ranks second nationally in sales of Geranium and Marigold flats, potted vegetable plants and flowering bulbs; and,
WHEREAS, the Michigan Greenhouse Growers Council represents the collective business interests of the floriculture sector of Michigan’s economy; and,
WHEREAS, we recognize this month as a time when residents beautify their yards and patios with flowers. This not only improves the great appearance of our state and the quality of life for gardeners and their neighbors, but also supports Michigan’s vibrant floriculture industry;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 2017 as Michigan Floriculture Month.
