WHEREAS, 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters each year and approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year; and,
WHEREAS, approximately 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year (1.6 million dogs and 1.6 million cats); and,
WHEREAS, adoption, contrary to popular misinformation, can help people find an inexpensive and loving companion and help animals find a much needed home; and,
WHEREAS, there is a need to increase public awareness about the need for pet adoption and to encourage all people to consider getting their next best friend and companion through adoption;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim July 8, 2017 as Pet Adoption Awareness Day in Michigan.
