October 22-28, 2017: Red Ribbon Week

WHEREAS, the Young Marines motto is “Strengthening the lives of America’s Youth” and they are dedicated to discipline, leadership, teamwork and a drug-free lifestyle; and,

WHEREAS,  the central pillar of the Young Marines is Drug Demand Reduction.  They participate in year round community projects and events that focus on reducing and eliminating drug abuse in our youth; and,

WHEREAS, the Red Ribbon Campaign® was started in response to the murder of DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena (a former Marine) in 1985 by drug traffickers in Mexico City; and,

WHEREAS, Red Ribbon Week represents a national anti-drug effort and awareness campaign observed annually in October throughout the United States; and,

WHEREAS, the Red Ribbon Campaign® is a focused effort by the Young Marines to have our youth pledge to live a drug-free life; and,

WHEREAS, support of Red Ribbon Week helps citizens across the country come together to keep children, families and communities safe, healthy and drug-free through parent training, networking and sponsoring the National Red Ribbon Campaign®; and,

WHEREAS, drug awareness and education are key elements in the fight against illicit drug use and drug trafficking in our communities.  We must reduce the demand for illicit drugs in order to win this war.   Education and awareness are one of the best ways to accomplish this mission;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 26-30, 2017 as Red Ribbon Week in Michigan.
