WHEREAS, Lung disease, known collectively as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is the third leading cause of death in the United States and costs the economy an estimated $31.9 billion annually; and,
WHEREAS, the goal of Respiratory Care Week is to recognize and thank respiratory care practitioners, promote respiratory health, increase awareness of respiratory health issues in all environments, and educate and encourage prospective students about career opportunities and growth of the profession; and,
WHEREAS, Millions of Michigan residents suffer from some type of lung disease which is why Respiratory Therapists are dedicated to providing information and administering tests to prevent or slow the spread of lung disease; and,
WHEREAS, during the month of November respiratory care practitioners, pulmonologists, health care advocates, and other professionals from around the state of Michigan will be raising awareness of respiratory health issues through special screenings and other activities;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 2017 as Respiratory Care Awareness Month.
