WHEREAS, the liberties, freedom, prosperity and security Americans are blessed with are protected through the dedication and sacrifices made by our service members, veterans and their families; and,
WHEREAS, on November 11, 2017, the nation will celebrate and honor those patriots, including Michigan’s more than 615,000 veterans, who have fought to protect the democratic ideals that are the foundation of our country; and,
WHEREAS, in the words of Dwight D. Eisenhower on Veterans Day 1954, “let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us consecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain”; and,
WHEREAS, we need to be aware of our veterans’ sacrifices and needs, to support them as they return home from war, reunite with their families and reintegrate into our society and to empower them to be productive citizens of our great state; and,
WHEREAS, the State of Michigan is committed to ensuring that Michigan is the most veteran-friendly state through examples such as the creation of the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, which provides the advice and assistance veterans and their families need as they transition through every chapter of their lives; and,
WHEREAS, Michigan is home to a growing economy with immediate employment opportunities, world-class colleges, universities and vocation centers, premier veterans homes, a stellar quality of life and a multitude of veterans service offices and organizations; and,
WHEREAS, a great way to thank our veterans for their contributions in defense of our freedom is to ensure they are respected for their talents and welcomed to learn, work, live and play in Michigan;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim November 2017 as Veterans Month in Michigan.
