WHEREAS, grandparents are a foundation for a child when the parent is not present; and,
WHEREAS, this role has traditionally been regarded as a second tier of support for the family system; and,
WHEREAS, grandparents caring for grandchildren provide a critical service for the benefit of the children and the children’s parents, but also it provides a benefit to the public as well; and,
WHEREAS, grandparents with an empty nest who raise grandchildren make accommodations to share their residence with their grandchildren and are the primary providers of child care; and,
WHEREAS, grandparents in the U.S. are raising over 2.4 million grandchildren nationally; and,
WHEREAS, this month we appreciate the dedication and sacrifice of grandparents who are raising their grandchildren;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Rick Snyder, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim September 2018 as Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Month.
