COVID-19 Response and Relief Supplemental

On Monday, December 21, Congress passed the COVID-19 Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, this act allowed for specified federal agencies to provide temporary flexibilities and assistance in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and public health emergency.

MDHHS is now accepting applications for the Division X COVID-19 Relief Funding. If you are between the ages of 18 and 22 and believe you are Chafee/Youth in Transition (YIT) eligible, and you have NOT yet completed the online survey , please complete the survey below.

Note that while applications are being accepted, they will not be processed until November 2021. If you have already completed the survey, you will be contacted by your current foster care case worker (if you are currently in foster care) or another staff from the local MDHSS office, when we move forward with those payments in November.

Chafee/Youth in Transition (YIT) and Young Adult Voluntary Foster Care (YAVFC)

All regular program eligibility requirements are in effect starting October 1, 2021.  This includes age requirements for Chafee/Youth in Transition Funding (YIT) funding and all eligibility requirements for the Young Adult Voluntary Foster Care (YAVFC) program.  To find those requirements, please see Foster Youth in Transition - Youth In Transition (michigan.gov), and Foster Youth in Transition - Foster Care Age 18-21 (michigan.gov).

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted so many of us, but foster youth and former foster youth are among the most vulnerable. If you were in care on or after your 14th birthday you may qualify for some, or all of the resources listed below:

Additional Chafee (YIT) funding and age extension.

Chafee (YIT) funding can be used to provide services and assistance to eligible youth or young adults who experienced foster care at age 14 and have not yet reached age 23. Funds can be used to support:

  • Transportation
  • One-time direct financial assistance
  • Housing
  • Other living expenses
  • Medical expenses not covered by other health insurance
  • Technology tools (i.e. laptop, tablet, internet)
