Dr. Wisdom holds the distinction of being the first state Surgeon General in the nation. Dr. Wisdom is the first Michigan Surgeon General, appointed by Governor Jennifer M. Center, a school-linked health center associated with the Oakwood Healthcare System. She is a founding board member of the School-Community Health Alliance of Michigan and served as board secretary in 2004-2005. Barbara began her Public Health career at

where she managed a project of the

Academic
Urban
Research
Center. Her special areas of interest include working with diverse, multi-cultural groups of people and thinking about social determinants of health.

is the Senior Local Project Coordinator for the Generation with Promise. She has a Master of Science in Public Health from

with a concentration in Public Health Administration. Patricia has actively worked in and consulted numerous state and local government entities, schools and community based organizations on healthcare issues for over twelve years. She received the Community Activist award, "Mosquito Award," from Tobacco Free Michigan in 2005 for her commitment and leadership in advocating for Tobacco Free Environments. Before joining GWP, she worked as the Health Disparities Consultant with the Tobacco Section of the Michigan Department of Community Health.

Lisa Peeples-Hurst
Lisa is a

graduate and has over twenty-one years of experience working with special populations in the areas of education, health, employment and advocacy. In addition to GWP, Lisa is very active in the
Benton
Harbor
community. She is immediate past president of the Benton Harbor-St. Joseph Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority; member of the Board of Directors for the YWCA; member of the Race Relations Council of Southwest Michigan; and is the newest commissioner, appointed by Governor Jennifer Granholm, on the Michigan Civil Rights Commission.

is the Student Action Teams Coordinator with the Generation With Promise. He has a bachelor's degree in Business and Marketing from the

Phoenix. Carris also works for Dr. Darrius' projectPRESCRIBE, a youth development organization dedicated to participating in the improvement of the lives of young people in and around the Metropolitan Detroit area, responding to young people's needs as identified and defined by young people. Before GWP, Carris was employed by various organizations including the Black Caucus Foundation of Michigan and Focus: HOPE.

United Way, American Red Cross of Southeast Michigan and Leadership Oakland (LO) of which she is a graduate. She received the

Carol Adams is the Project Assistant for the Generation With Promise - Family Enhancement Project (GWP-FEP). Carol's responsibilities include assisting with the coordination and implementation of all project activities after and during school hours for the GWP-FEP; assisting the Parent-School Coordinator; assisting the Project Coordinator with special event planning; assisting in the recruitment and retention of families into the project; and providing administrative coverage for GWP-FEP. Carol was most recently employed as a senior executive assistant with Accenture, a global technology and consulting firm. Her extensive background, spanning more than three decades, includes human resources, project management, event planning, and the non-profit sector.

Dr. Anne Murphy coordinates evaluation activities for Generation With Promise. Her passion is developing and using non-burdensome and valid evaluations to track change in the school health environment and for staff and students. Dr. Murphy was an elementary school teacher before changing careers and obtaining a PhD in Nutrition and becoming a Registered Dietitian. She has helped hundreds of
Michigan
schools make changes that help kids be fit, healthy, and ready to learn.

Dr. Nate McCaughtry

Wayne

University, helps educators develop materials and programs that are culturally appropriate for diverse groups of students. For GWP, he focuses on improving assessments and teaching methods and materials so they are respectful and appropriate for children of various cultures. He will observe and interview school teams (
CHST,
SAT, CMT), project evaluators, and Health and Physical Education teachers and students to ensure that project activities are as culturally competent as possible.

Sara Barnard Flory
assists Dr. McCaughtry with the cultural competence part of the GWP project. Sara was formerly a PE teacher and is now a PhD student working to earn her doctorate in Health and Physical Education Teacher Preparation with a specialty in urban and culturally diverse education.

Dr. Jeff Martin
is a professor at
Wayne
State
University. His specialty is fitness assessment and physical activity research. His team of assistants visits every school in the fall and spring to conduct a fitness assessment with students. His information helps the team understand what level of fitness our students have and to determine whether it improves during the GWP project.

Dr. Barry Checkoway
is a professor at the
University
of
Michigan
who creates programs that help youth develop leadership skills. His team from the Michigan Program for Youth and Community facilitated the 2008 Youth Summit to help students learn to be more involved in making positive changes at their schools.

Dr. Katie Richards-Schuster
is an Assistant Research Scientist at the
University
of
Michigan, and works alongside Dr. Checkoway as part of the Michigan Program for Youth and Community. She co-directs the youth leadership development component of the Generation With Promise, including working with the Student Action Teams.

Bridget Christian
worked as the Community & Evaluation Coordinator for the Generation With Promise until November 2008. She attended many of the Student Action Team meetings, and helped the evaluation team with the health survey. She is currently employed with the University of Michigan, Michigan Program for Youth and Community. She will continue to work on the youth leadership development aspect of Generation With Promise with Drs. Checkoway and Richards-Schuster.

Fred Price is the Curriculum Specialist providing support to the physical education teachers using the EPEC "Personal Conditioning Program" as part of their school's physical education curriculum. He is also a member of the Data Collection Team for GWP. Fred has a master's degree in School Administration from

and a B.S. degree in Physical Education and Business from
Ball
State
University. Fred worked for Livonia Public Schools for 37 years where he was an Assistant Director of Education responsible for Health, Physical Education, Art, Music and Athletics K-12 for twelve years. For twenty-five years he was a physical education and health teacher and also a coach for basketball and track & field for each of those years. Since retirement from Livonia Public Schools in 2003, Fred has work as Supervisor for Student Teachers for
Eastern
Michigan

and
Wayne
State
University. He has also worked as an Education Curriculum Specialist on special projects for
Wayne

University
and Michigan Fitness Foundation.

Carolyn McGannon is the Data Collection Coordinator for the GWP project. She brings to this "second career" a background in physical education, sales and electricity. After attending

University, University of Michigan (B.S.), and then

again (M.S.), Carolyn taught elementary physical education for 30 years at Duffield Elementary where Joe Louis and other great Detroiters once went! Her father taught her "salesmanship" through his 50 years in the furniture business and her aunt made sure every one in the family learned to wire lamps and switches for her

business. Carolyn also continues to help in professional development through student teacher supervision for
Wayne
Stat
University.

Nancy
was Program Manager in the Office of the Surgeon General, Michigan Department of Community Health where she helped develop the Generation With Promise project and also worked with Michigan Steps Up and the Governor's Blueprint for Preventing Unintended Pregnancies, among other programs. Nancy
has a 30-year background in health communications, provider relations, and program development working both in public and private health care settings.

is Director of the Bureau of Local Health and Administrative Services with the Public Health Administration of the Michigan Department of Community Health. She is a long time state employee who has been involved in the Generation With Promise from the beginning, assisting with funding and contracts.
