Per Act 407 of 2016, veterans may apply experience gained while serving in the U.S. armed forces towards requirements for taking the exam, if the experience falls within at least one of the classifications under subsection (3) of the Forbes Mechanical Contractors Act, 1984 PA 192. Subsection (3) states:
(3) A contractor's license that is issued is classified and limited as 1 or more of the following:
(a) Hydronic heating and cooling and process piping.
(b) HVAC equipment.
(e) Limited service, heating or refrigeration.
(f) Unlimited service, heating or refrigeration.
(g) Fire suppression.
Additionally, per Act 407 of 2016 Article 4, all fees, including examination, initial, renewal, and any other fee listed under section 339.5417 of the Skilled Trades Regulation Act are waived for veterans.
In order to utilize the experience waiver, the veteran must submit an affidavit or letter signed by a commanding officer, supervisor, or military superior with direct knowledge of his or her service describing their experience as a contractor in 1 or more of the classifications listed in subsection (3) (above).
To utilize the experience and fee waivers, the veteran must provide a copy of their DD214 and DD215 to prove separation from the armed forces was with an honorable character of service or under honorable conditions (general) character of service.
The form and affidavit may be provided with the application. The application(s) may be found here.
