"Libraries without Walls" conference demonstrates how adaptive technology can meet the information needs of the visually or physically impaired

June 5, 2013 - The Michigan Bureau of Services for Blind Persons (BSBP) yesterday held its biennial "Libraries without Walls" conference in Lansing where experts demonstrated  to librarians, educators and patrons how adaptive technology can meet the information needs of the visually or physically impaired via the Internet and electronic media.

"The understanding and accessibility of cutting-edge technology can be a vital communication and learning resource for Michigan residents with disabilities," BSBP Director Ed Rodgers said. "Our bureau is focused on providing a diverse set of quality services to ensure that blind individuals have the opportunities they need to achieve active employability and independence."

Conference attendees were given demonstrations and presentations on adaptive technology, including:

  • The present and future of library services for persons with visual and physical impairments.
  • The accessibility of the iPhone, iPad and Android operating system.
  • The capabilities of the Window-Eyes, Macintosh VoiceOver, JAWS and other screen reader programs.
  • The reading opportunities for K-12 students using mobile devices.
  • The accessibility of the National Federation of the Blind's Newsline, where subscribers can access over 300 newspapers from around the country.
