October 18, 2018 – Media representatives are invited to attend the Bureau of Services for Blind Persons (BSBP) annual Achievement Honor Roll Awards presentation to:

  • BSBP consumers who are exemplary in achieving their goals for employment and/or independent living after vision loss;
  • community partners recognized for their collaboration with the BSBP in increasing opportunities for people who are blind or visually impaired to achieve independence and/or employment; and
  • employers who have shown leadership in hiring people who are blind or visually impaired based on their abilities.

The invitation-only event will be held Friday, October 19, from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. in the Anderson House Office Building, Mackinac Room, 5th floor. Media members are requested to attend between 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. to do interviews with award winners and the BSBP director, and to film footage of the ceremony.

Michigan’s services to the blind have proven to be invaluable to Michigan citizens and the economy. The BSBP assists blind and visually impaired persons throughout the state to attain employment through vocational rehabilitation and the Business Enterprise Program; and older blind to live independently through the Independent Living program. The Braille and Talking Book library provides digital talking books and braille books to those with a visual disability or people with a physically based reading disability. BSBP operates in the Dept. of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.

The Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) and Independent Living programs described in this news advisory are funded 78.7 percent through a VR grant from the U.S. Department of Education and 21.3 percent through state funding. Total federal funding for federal fiscal year 2018 was approximately $19,409,613.
