Georgia-Pacific Chemicals Grayling Plant Receives Fourth Consecutive MIOSHA MVPP Star Award for Workplace Safety

April 10, 2018 - Georgia-Pacific (GP) Chemicals LLC in Grayling received its fourth consecutive Michigan Voluntary Protection Program (MVPP) Star Award from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) for workplace safety and health excellence. The MIOSHA program is part of the Dept. of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).

"We are pleased to again recognize Georgia-Pacific’s management and employees for their outstanding record and commitment to workplace safety and health,” said MIOSHA Director Bart Pickelman. “We look forward to continuing our longstanding partnership that has led to this significant achievement, demonstrating how a safe workplace is a productive workplace."

GP Chemicals has been a MIOSHA MVPP Star site since 2007. The MVPP Star is the highest safety award available from MIOSHA and is given to companies that both implement protections beyond MIOSHA requirements and have injury and illness rates below the industry average for the last three years. The site is exempt from programmed inspections for three years

Identifying best practices is integral to the MVPP continuous improvement process. Among the company’s best practices was the implementation of new safety protocols for unloading semi-tankers to protect the safety of drivers. GP Chemicals has also implemented a Critical Hazards Field Guide to increase employee awareness and understanding about critical hazards, risks and controls. The guide was developed in partnership with all GP businesses and their Global Safety & Health team to complement current facility specific safety policies.

The facility employs 27 workers and manufactures industrial resins, formaldehyde, urea formaldehyde concentrate and liquid fertilizer. Georgia-Pacific has five additional facilities in Michigan that manufactures Dixie cups, plates and cutlery; corrugated packaging, employing approximately 400 people directly and 1,000 jobs indirectly. Corporate GP headquarters are in Atlanta, GA.
