November 23, 2016 – Herman Miller, Inc. recently received renewal of the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (MIOSHA) highest workplace safety and health designation for its Hickory Facility in Spring Lake.
MIOSHA’s Michigan Voluntary Protection Program (MVPP) recognizes employers actively working toward achieving excellence in workplace safety and health. The agency awards the “Star” status to companies that both implement protections beyond MIOSHA requirements, and have injury and illness rates below the industry average for the last three years.
The Hickory Facility received its initial MVPP Star award in January 2012. Two additional Herman Miller facilities, located in Holland and Zeeland, are also current MVPP Star sites. All three sites are exempt from programmed inspections for three years.
“It’s a significant achievement for a company to meet MVPP criteria and program requalification is equally commendable,” said MIOSHA Director Bart Pickelman. “Just as we’ve seen at other Herman Miller sites, this award renewal reflects the Hickory Facility team’s dedication to the health and safety of its more than 300 workers.”
The Hickory Facility manufactures office systems furniture. One of the facility’s best practices is its lifting device inspection program. In addition to chains, chain slings and other metal lifting devices, the program includes nylon slings, which are identified and tagged for inspections performed by the vendor contracted to inspect lifting devices.
“From the production floor to the office workstation, the safety of our employees and visitors is ingrained in everything that we do,” said Gabe Wing, Herman Miller director of safety and sustainability. “Herman Miller has established a culture where safety expectations are driven by employees at all levels, and everyone is held accountable for identifying and correcting potential safety hazards.”
