Labor and Economic Opportunity
The SHPO maintains the most comprehensive files of previously identified historic properties (buildings, districts, objects, archaeological sites, shipwrecks, and structures) in Michigan. These files are fundamental to completing applications for Section 106 Review, planning surveys (above and/or below ground), initiating or revising National Register of Historic Places nominations, and other research initiatives. These files are not yet available online and must be viewed in our office by appointment. Please note that archaeological files/locations are confidential and will only be shared as appropriate for the project.
Effective August 11, SHPO was transferred from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority to the Michigan Strategic Fund/Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Staff relocated to the building on September 30, 2019. Research appointments will be conducted in our new offices at 300 North Washington Square, Lansing, MI 48913. Parking is located at street pay-by-the-hour meters and paid parking garages around the area. See the map below.
Note that all mail, including project applications, should be sent to SHPO-MEDC, 300 North Washington Square, Lansing MI 48913 effective immediately. Mail sent to our old address will be delayed or returned.
If you submitted a project for review and wish to check on the status, remember that under the National Historic Preservation Act regulations, SHPO has 30 days from the date we receive the complete application to offer comment. The move to another facility coupled with a staff shortage means we are often reviewing projects just before the deadline. As a result, it is difficult to estimate a time for completion. If in fact we surpass the 30 day comment period, it is up to the Federal agency as to how to proceed. Projects are reviewed fastest when they are fully complete upon submission and mailed to our correct address. Please contact SHPO if you have questions.
Begin by emailing the following basic information to SHPOresearch@michigan.gov:
Whether you are interested in architectural and/or archaeological files.
Names of all counties, cities and townships in your research area.
If you are interested in archaeological files, you must also include:
Your research area clearly marked on a 7.5’ USGS Topographic Quadrangle Map that shows Section numbers. Be certain to include the correct quadrangle map name.
A complete list of Township, Range and Section numbers in your research area.
Staff will use this information to determine if we have relevant files for you to view. If we do not, we’ve saved you a trip! If we have files for you to view or if your project is located in a high-volume area (large cities), we will schedule a research appointment.
Research appointments are available Wednesday through Friday, 9:00-4:30 p.m. with a minimum of one (1) week advance notice.
The Michigan SHPO will be closed for research the week of November 25-29 due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
Research appointments will be conducted in our new offices at 300 North Washington Square, Lansing, MI 48913. Parking is located at street pay-by-the-hour meters and paid parking garages around the area.
