Brian Conway, SHPO

  • The Heritage Restoration Grant Program is a new grant in connection with MEDC for Non-Profit organizations.
  • Thirteenth Governor’s Awards and it was well attended and run by Laura Ashlee. The awards went to:
    • Woda Group, Hooker DeJong Architects & Engineers, and the City of Menominee – The Rehabilitation of Lloyd’s Department Store, Menominee
    • Michigan Department of Transportation, Grand Traverse Bay Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians, Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, Match-e-be-nash-she-wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians, Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi, Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan, and Commonwealth Cultural Resources Group – 231/US-31 Holland to Grand Haven Archaeological Data Recoveries
    • Friends of the Bohm Theatre, Albion Community Foundation, the Greater Albion Community, Mitchell and Mouat Architects and Gordon Martin Builder, Inc. – The rehabilitation of the Bohm Theatre
    • Eyde Company, Quinn Evans Architects, and Granger Construction – The rehabilitation of J. W. Knapp’s Department Store, Lansing
    • Roxbury Group and Trans Inns Management, Kraemer Design, and Walbridge - The rehabilitation of the David Whitney Building, Detroit
  • Conway and Arnold participated as speakers at the Modernism week in Palm Springs.  They have been approached by a publisher and are working on a book that they hope will be published by next February.  There are two books about modernism in Michigan and the first book will contain the essays from both symposiums and the second book will be a coffee table book with photographs.
  • The Michigan Heritage Restoration Program (MHRP), the Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program (MLAP), and the Certified Local Government grant program (CLG) are underway.  The following communities have received awards.
    • CLG - Saline, Detroit Belle Isle Aquarium and Conservancy, the Scarab Club, and the Menominee Opera House.
    • MLAP – Charlevoix Lighthouse, Crisp Point Light Tower, Old Mission Point Lighthouse, Sand Point Lighthouse, South Haven Lighthouse Keeper’s Dwelling
    • MHRP -  Friends of Mary Sheldon Ismon House in Albion, Ford Piquette Avenue Plant, Indian Village Neighborhood for historic streetlight rehabilitation, the Dexter Area Historical Society’s Gordon Hall, Franklin Historical Society’s Broughton House, Friends of Ironwood Carnegie library, and the Vine Neighborhood Association in Kalamazoo for the rehabilitation of the Central Corners building.
  • The MHPN conference is next week May 13-16 in Midland and Saturday is the Michigan Modern Day.
