Labor and Economic Opportunity
The SHPO maintains the most comprehensive files of previously identified historic properties (buildings, districts, objects, archaeological sites, shipwrecks, and structures) in Michigan. These files are fundamental to completing applications for Section 106 Review, planning surveys (above and/or below ground), initiating or revising National Register of Historic Places nominations, and other research initiatives. These files are not yet available online and must be viewed in our office by appointment. Please note that archaeological files/locations are confidential and will only be shared as appropriate for the project.
Effective August 11, SHPO was transferred from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority to the Michigan Strategic Fund/Michigan Economic Development Corporation. We will be making a physical office move near the end of September. Below is an update on our move and scheduled closure of the SHPO office for researchers and other appointments.
September 10th – September 20th – SHPO staff will accommodate as many research appointments as possible to assist consultants with their projects. If you need to schedule a research appointment please contact the SHPOresearch@michigan.gov email and we will get back to you ASAP.
September 23rd - ? – SHPO staff will be unavailable for research requests of any kind while we pack, move and unpack in our new space. We do not have an exact date but will provide updates on this website, via email and social media as they are available. Once we re-open for research, appointments will be conducted in our new offices at 300 N. Washington Square, Lansing, MI 48913. Parking is located at street pay-by-the-hour meters and paid parking garages around the area. The procedures for scheduling research appointments will be the same.
This does not excuse Section 106 applicants from conducting sufficient research to identify historic or archaeological sites within project areas for Section 106 projects. Section 106 applications submitted without the proper identification efforts will be returned unreviewed with a request for additional information. Please plan accordingly during this transition.
All mail should be sent to SHPO-MEDC, 300 North Washington Square, Lansing MI 48913 effective immediately.
We appreciate your patience as we make this move and look forward to reopening in our new office.
Begin by emailing the following basic information to SHPOresearch@michigan.gov:
Whether you are interested in architectural and/or archaeological files.
Names of counties, cities and townships in your research area.
If you are interested in archaeological files, you must also include:
Your research area clearly marked on a 7.5’ USGS Topographic Quadrangle Map that shows Section numbers. Include the correct quadrangle map name.
A complete list of Township, Range and Section numbers in your research area.
Staff will use this information to determine if we have relevant files for you to view. If we do not, we’ve saved you a trip! If we have files for you to view or if your project is located in a high-volume area (large cities), we will schedule a research appointment. Effective June 1, 2019, appointments are available 9:00-5:00 pm from Tuesdays through Fridays with a minimum of one (1) week advanced notice. Please email any questions to the above email and we will respond within two business days.
