August 6, 2019 -  Cintas First Aid & Safety #305 Grand Rapids (Cintas #305), a site that sells and services first aid and safety supplies for businesses in the greater Grand Rapids area, received the Michigan Voluntary Protection Program (MVPP) Star award from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) for workplace safety and health excellence.

“It is a pleasure to recognize Cintas for creating a company culture that promotes excellence in workplace safety and health,” said MIOSHA Director Bart Pickelman. “Implementing best practices for increased worker safety can have a significant positive impact on a company’s bottom line and exemplifies a true commitment among management and staff at this facility.”

MIOSHA Consultation Education and Training Director Nella Davis-Ray presented the MVPP Star Award to Cintas #305 General Manager Jackie Nilson who accepted on behalf of all employees.

“MVPP means sending our partners home in the same condition -- or better than how they came to work,” said Nilson. “It also reiterates that safety is our number one priority!”

Cintas #305 was recognized for excellence in building a positive safety culture where management and hourly employees or “partners” have an open and accepting working relationship, where safety is number one, and where no priorities are placed above a partner’s safety.

Safety blitz route ride evaluations highlight sales/service representatives’ safety habits, driving, use of personal protection equipment and identification of potential customer hazards.

MIOSHA established the MVPP program in 1996 to recognize employers with exemplary safety and health systems and is open to all Michigan employers. To be eligible for the MVPP Star program, an applicant must demonstrate that the injury and illness incidence rates for each of the last three calendar years are below the rates published for their respective North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) code. The incidence rates for Cintas #305 was below the industry average for their NAICS code 423450 – Medical, Dental, and Hospital Equipment and Supplies Merchant Wholesalers. The site employs 25 people.

The MVPP is designed to establish a cooperative relationship between management, labor, and MIOSHA. MVPP participants implement safety and health management systems that provide protections beyond what is required by MIOSHA standards. Current MVPP Star sites are available to mentor other companies that have an interest and desire to improve their safety and health management system.

As the most prestigious safety and health award given in Michigan, Cintas #305 becomes one of only 29 companies in the state of Michigan with MVPP Star status.
