Approval of Minutes for 1/19/2000: Minutes were approved as submitted.
Prior to the agenda items being addressed, it was recommended and approved that Connie Hibbert be added as a member of this committee. It was also moved and supported that no additional members be added, subject to future needs.
Agenda Item: Review responses from Director Cannon regarding recommendations submitted from January 19, meeting i.e. please review Director Cannon's responses sent under previous copy.
Director Cannon's responses to items 1, 2 and 6 were reviewed. There was no further discussion on these items. Items 3, 4 and 5 were tabled, for the following reasons:
Recommend that the consumer pre-training, self-evaluation portion of MCBTC survey be administered within one-week prior to arrival to the Center and that the post-training, self-evaluation portion be administered within one-week after returning home. Director Cannon's response was that he is "Open to procedure recommended. Initially, suggest referring counselor/teacher administer items mentioned." Melody to bring this item to Executive Management meeting to determine when field staff will assume responsibility for pre and post consumer portions of survey. Melody was not available to provide input.
Recommend a "follow up" survey of individuals six months after consumers conclude their Center program. This refers to the consumer portion, post training, of the MCBTC survey. Director Cannon's response was "absolutely support this concept." Melody to bring this item to Executive Management meeting to determine when follow up survey would be implemented. Melody was not available to provide input.
Recommend that an outside resource, knowledgeable in appropriate research procedures, be used to administer consumer self-evaluation portions of the MCBTC survey. Director Cannon's response was "Pat to share copy of Bob Robertson's report and blank skills survey form with Michigan Consultants for their review and input." No input available regarding status of this recommendation.
Agenda Item: Sub-committee report of 4/12/00 meeting about proposed training for supervisors to enhance "sensitivity awareness." Sub-committee members are Janet McInnis, Betty Lujan Roberts, Cindy Caldwell, Betty Rush, and Charlene Gordon.
Sub-committee supported Director Cannon's recommendation to place emphasis on significance of skills of blindness training as related to vocational placement.
After considerable discussion, the committee as a whole recommended that a workshop be developed for MCB staff to: Review what skills of blindness are; How do skills of blindness used in the consumers home transfer to the workplace; and How can Rehabilitation Teachers help consumers make adaptations in the workplace?
A motion was made and passed to accept the above recommendation, and to request that Director Cannon set a date and implement the workshop. If requested, sub-committee members agreed to work with staff designated by Director Cannon to further develop and implement this workshop.
Agenda Item: Sub-committee report of statement proposed by Director Cannon for addition to self-evaluation portions of MCBTC survey, regarding consumers ability to accept blindness and view herself/himself in a positive manner as a blind individual. Sub-committee members are Shig Toda, Melody Lindsey, Faith Meadows, Michelle Visscher and Betty Lujan Roberts.
Discussion followed regarding whether this item could be addressed by a single question, series of questions, or if this item should become part of MCBTC survey form. Questions also raised regarding what other programs have done, if anything, in regarding to this item.
Motion made and passed not to attach this item to current MCBTC survey.
Motion made and passed to continue evaluation of this item by subcommittee. Geer Wilcox was added as a member of the sub-committee. Recommended that an evaluation be made to determine what other programs may have done in regards to this agenda item.
