MSHDA awards $670,084 in statewide neighborhood enhancement grants

LANSING, MICH. – Fifteen Michigan communities will benefit from Neighborhood Enhancement Program (NEP) grants this summer that will generate high-impact projects directly tied to stabilizing and improving the local area.

“We want to support innovative, community-driven ideas that address specific needs in every corner of the state,” said Acting Executive Director Gary Heidel. “The majority of the projects are geared toward single-family home enhancements that improve the quality of life for people living in these neighborhoods.”

NEP grants require that the projects and activities align with one or more of five core components: housing enhancements, affordable homeownership opportunity (HPR), homeowner emergency repairs, beautification and neighborhood public amenity enhancements. The funded projects must be completed by the fall and make a noticeable difference within the community.

The goal of these grants is to help – and eventually showcase – model Michigan neighborhoods where residents are engaged and facilitating positive change for their communities.

The grant awardees are:

Bay Area Housing
Awarded $50,000 to provide single-family home improvements and enhancements for up to 24 houses in Bay City’s Realtor Park Neighborhood.

Community Encompass
Awarded $49,089 to provide housing enhancements for up to three senior citizen homeowners in the McLaughlin Neighborhood in Muskegon. The grant funding will also support improvements to McLaughlin Community Park.

City of Eaton Rapids
Awarded $50,000 to provide housing enhancements to single-family properties in the North Corridor neighborhood.

GenesisHope
Awarded $50,000 to offer housing enhancements including painting, planting perennials, adding curb appeal and minor home repairs for eligible single-family homeowners in Detroit’s Islandview Greater Villages district.

Gogebic Ontonagon CAA
Awarded $50,000 for exterior home improvements such as siding, roofing, porches and sidewalks for single-family homes in Bessemer’s Yale neighborhood.
 
Habitat for Humanity of Oakland
Awarded $50,000 for Rock the Block home improvement and neighborhood beautification projects including landscape cleanup, raking, edging, hedge trimming, brush clearing, gutter cleaning or repair and accessibility improvements in the Unity Park and Ferry Farms neighborhoods in Pontiac, and in Southfield’s Southwest and Southeast Evergreen neighborhoods.

Jefferson East, Inc.
Awarded $50,000 for residential home enhancements, emergency home repairs and beautification activities in the Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood.

City of Lapeer
Awarded $49,995 for roof repair or replacement on homeowner-occupied single-family homes and to replace a park pavilion roof with a steel roof.

LifeBuilders Detroit
Awarded $50,000 to focus on residential home porch repairs, railing installations and public amenities in the Regent Park community.

City of Negaunee
Awarded $50,000 for neighborhood enhancements including painting, window fixtures, shutters, awnings, front door paint and/or repair and walkway reconstruction or cleanup in the residential neighborhood near downtown Negaunee.

TrueNorth Community Services (NCCS)
Awarded $46,000 to provide housing enhancements for up to six homes in a 10-block residential area in White Cloud.

Wayne Metro CAA
Awarded $50,000 to rebuild or restore porches for eligible homeowners within the Courtland neighborhood.

Wayne County Land Bank
Awarded $25,000 for porch repairs and accessibility features such as wheelchair ramps for low- to moderate-income senior homeowners in Highland Park (non-Cortland Neighborhoods).

WoodBridge NDC
Awarded $50,000 for emergency home repairs such as leaking roofs and rotting porches for low-income senior homeowners. A portion of the grant will be used to clean and maintain safe community parks in Detroit’s Woodbridge neighborhood.
