This class will assist participants not only in the choice of academic and/or career direction, but also in the development of individual identity and purpose.
Overall Goal of Counseling and Career Planning:
Counseling: offer guidance, direction, and support to the participant to help them live more independent, fulfilling lives.
Career Planning: assist the participant in determining their career goal and how to achieve those goals.
Career decision making involves increasing self-awareness, exploring career options, acquiring the knowledge, skills and experience that will help an individual implement their career choices and self-marketing skills.
The first step in career decision making is developing self-awareness. Career decisions are based on an individual’s interests, values, skills, experiences, and goals. Assessments assist with identifying interests, abilities, and values as they relate to career fields. These assessments increase awareness of career options, reinforcing those options already being considered and expose individuals to ones that they have not yet considered.
The second step is to explore career options. This can be done by using online career exploration sites such as the Career Index Plus, Occupational Outlook Handbook, CareerOneStop, conducting informational interviews and job shadows, attending career fairs and meeting with academic advisors at colleges and universities.
The third step is to acquire knowledge, skills, and experience by obtaining post-secondary training such as vocational training, career certifications and degrees, becoming active in extracurricular activities and volunteering to develop teamwork, interpersonal and leadership skills. You can also gain job skills from part time work, summer jobs, internships, co-ops, working in your neighborhood and participating in community activities.
The last step is to develop self-marketing skills to help implement career goals. This can be done by participating in job seeking skills training (resume and cover letter writing, effective methods of job search, interviewing etc.).
Counseling and Career Planning Skill List:
