Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic and Asbestos Training Requirements
Because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity's (LEO's) Asbestos Program will temporarily allow online asbestos refresher courses. This applies to asbestos refresher training courses for worker, contractor/supervisor, building inspector, management planner, and project designer. Please be advised, this does not apply to the initial asbestos training courses for the aforementioned disciplines. A pre-existing approval for a standard (i.e., classroom-based) annual refresher training course does not extend to cover an online annual refresher training course. Each online annual refresher training course must be separately approved by LEO's Asbestos Program. This includes a completed application, payment of the required fee, submittal of all of the required course materials, providing a link and access information for the courses, and instructor qualifications. All refresher courses must comply with the Asbestos Workers Accreditation Act, Act 440 of 1988, as amended (Act 440) and the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Model Accreditation Program (MAP).
In 2007, the EPA issued "EPA Guidelines for States Regarding Online Asbestos MAP Annual Refresher Training." Approved training providers are required to develop and implement the guidelines for the online asbestos refresher training courses.
Please review the document below for Act 440, EPA MAP Guidelines, and the EPA Guidelines for States Regarding Online Asbestos MAP Annual Refresher Training.
