What is Registered Apprenticeship?
Registered Apprenticeships are industry-driven, high-quality career training programs in which employers develop and prepare Michigan’s future workforce. The earn-and-learn models meet national standards for registration with the U.S. Department of Labor.
Apprentices gain paid work experience, related classroom instruction and a national industry-recognized credential while building the right skills in a new career.
At the same time, Registered Apprenticeship helps employers fill critical talent pipelines, beginning an immediate transfer of knowledge from current to future high-value workers.
Why Registered Apprenticeship?
Registered Apprenticeships are a proven training model benefitting both career seekers and employers. This model is gaining momentum as a cost-effective alternative or in addition to college education. Registered Apprenticeship Programs offer a consistent method to recruit, train, and retain talent that complements current talent development strategies.
Registered Apprentices receive on-the-job training from an experienced mentor and related classroom instruction to learn necessary skills while earning a paycheck.
Employers train and retain talent to their own standards. Unlike many education programs which are designed to prepare students for any number of career pathways, apprenticeships are designed by and for the employer with a specialized focus on the unique needs of a specific job.
The use of the Registered Apprenticeship training model is expanding across both traditional and nontraditional industries into more than 1,200 occupations, including careers in advanced manufacturing, agriculture, construction, education, energy, healthcare, information technology, mobility, and many others.
A brighter future through Registered Apprenticeship
Employers today have more job openings than candidates who possess the necessary work skills. On the other hand, many potential employees do not possess the skills necessary to take advantage of these high-wage opportunities.
The State Apprenticeship Expansion team partners with employers, program sponsors and educators to increase the number of Registered Apprenticeship opportunities in the state of Michigan. They provide employer sponsors resources to promote the Registered Apprenticeship training model so that more career seekers will benefit from the earn-and-learn model.
