Pie! Often round but not mathematical. In summer, Michigan is a different place. There is the: sun, water, festivals, traveling, sports, music and community events. Such summers are the structure family memories are built upon. What makes Michigan different is that it is rich in small farm produce: peaches, blueberries, rhubarb, strawberries, cherries, apples, grapes and more all prime for delicious dishes. 2008, Michigan Notable Book author Patty Pinner understood the link between memories and cooking when she wrote her award-winning book, Sweets, a Collection of Soul Food Desserts and Memories. Sweets was listed as one of the best cookbooks of the year by the New York Times. Raised in Saginaw, Pinner has written of her mother, “My mother created moods with food.” During a Michigan summer, it is likely that the most common mood when families sit down to a dinner or picnic table during a delightful day is joy particularly when capped off with a pie made of fresh local ingredients. Of Midwestern cooking Pinner stated, “I actually find comfort in foods that take me back to the security of my childhood. Food is a clear indicator of security especially when dessert is part of the meal. Savoring comfort in everyday life, and in food, is the hallmark of midwestern living.” Beyond pastries, Pinner has added to her published collection with a cookbook on breakfast and brunch recipes. On the savory side, she likes to use her mother’s “Trinity” of chopped onions, garlic and bell peppers to season food along the lines of her southern ancestors. More heritage recipes are in the works but featuring chocolate as the main ingredient: desserts: cakes, candies, cookies, pies, and puddings. No matter the flavor, take the step and create more joyous memories with food with the help of one of Patty Pinner’s recipes. There will be stories to tell for years.
