The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting applications for part-time Deputy Sheriff positions. Multiple part-time positions are open on the Road Patrol and also within the Recreation Division. After hiring, deputies in these positions are vetted for possible placement into future full-time Road Patrol deputy positions.
Wages for these part-time positions are defined by the Deputies union contract. The 2018 starting wage is $15.97 per hour. A part-time deputy is eligible for a wage increase after working 1040 hours. A second wage increase will be received after working an additional 1040 hours. Thereafter, a wage increase will be received for every 2080 hours worked until top deputy pay is reached.
Applicants being considered for employment will be required to pass a criminal background check, psychological examination, and physical examinations, which include a drug screen. If hired, applicant must successfully complete a department Field Training Program.

As a member of the Sheriff's Road Patrol, a part-time Deputy Sheriff performs general duty police work in the protection of life and property throughout the county. Maintains law and order, prevents crime, deals with complaints, and renders emergency assistance to the public as a uniformed officer. May serve civil papers. Work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations and standard methods and practices. A degree of independent initiative and judgment must be exercised by the employee under emergency conditions. The work may involve an element of danger.
As a member of the Sheriff’s Recreation Division, a part-time Deputy Sheriff performs general snowmobile, ORV, and marine patrols. Enforces applicable state and local laws. Investigates snowmobile, ORV, and watercraft crashes.
The qualified candidate will have the following knowledge and skills:
The ability to quickly learn law enforcement methods, practices and procedures. Ability to gain a good working knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws and to attain efficiency in the methods and practices of criminal investigation expected. Ability to carry out instructions and swiftly adopt an effective and sound course of action, as well as an ability to deal fairly and effectively with the public. Good powers of observation, sound judgment, good moral character, combined with excellent physical and mental condition, courage, strength and the ability to withstand stress required. Proficiency in the use of firearms. Must possess excellent verbal communication skills and be capable of adapting to potentially violent or unstable situations.
For candidates seeking the part-time positions within the Recreation Division: previous experience operating snowmobiles, ATV’s, and watercraft is preferred, however, not required. At the conclusion of the training process, a candidate must be able to demonstrate they can operate these vehicles safely and according to department standards.
Required Education, Training, and Experience:
In order to apply, an applicant must be currently licensed and/or licensable through MCOLES. Applicants who do not qualify must be licensable by May 31st, 2018. Applicants who are currently licensed and/or licensable may be given preference during the hiring process.
Graduation from high school is required; a college degree is preferred. Must possess a valid driver's license. Any history of driver’s license suspension and/or restrictions are not immediate disqualifiers but will be strongly considered and evaluated. No felony convictions; no pending felony or misdemeanor charges. No domestic violence convictions.
