Farmington Hills Police Department: Police Cadet Closing Date: September 30, 2022

Job Title: Police Cadet
Pay Rate: $20.00 per hour
Hours: Part-time - Up to 40 hours per week

The City of Farmington Hill is currently accepting applications for the position of Police Cadet: 

The Cadet Program’s purpose is to identify suitable candidates to be sponsored by the agency to attend a state certified police academy, of the agency’s choosing, and to promote these candidates to the position of police officer.

Firsthand exposure to the law enforcement profession and the duties performed by police officers. 
The opportunity to work and attend college while achieving qualifications required for academy attendance.
Sponsorship to a Michigan police academy at the discretion of the Chief of Police.

Cadet duties and assignments:

processing and containment of prisoners 
report writing 
assisting citizens at the Command Desk 
abandoned vehicle processing 
school crossing guard duties 
answering phones 
assisting in the operation of the Communication Center 
and all other duties which shall be deemed appropriate for this position 

Qualifications for Employment:

1. The applicant must be a citizen of the United States. 
2. The prospective cadet must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment. 
3. Applicant must successfully pass the examination process. 
4. The applicant must possess a valid U.S. Motor Vehicle Operator's License and a good driving record. 
5. The applicant must not have been convicted of a felony or adjudged insane. 
6. The applicant must be a high school graduate or equivalent at time of application. 
7. The applicant must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language. 
8. The applicant must be free from infectious or contagious diseases and must not have a physical disability, which would preclude him/her from performing the duties of a police cadet. (MCOLES Standard)
9. Hearing must be normal. (MCOLES Standard)
10. The applicant must have normal peripheral and color vision in both eyes. Deficiencies in visual acuity of either eye must be corrected to 20/20. When requested to do so, each applicant must submit a written statement from a physician giving the applicant's visual acuity in each eye uncorrected.  (MCOLES Standard)
11. The applicant must not have a serious record of misdemeanor arrests and/or traffic violations.
12. May be assigned to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.  
13. The applicant must not have a history of drug addiction, dependency, or abuse.
14. The applicant may be asked to assist with receiving equipment delivered to the department and distributing police equipment to officers.  The applicant must be able to lift and move up to 50-pounds.  

Education: The applicant must be a high school graduate or equivalent at time of application. 

Special Skills & Training: The Cadet Program is designed to provide the cadet an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to become a candidate for promotion.
