GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for maintaining a safe environment for the citizens of the City of Ecorse through effective patrol techniques, community policing, and all calls for assistance. Under the general direction of the Director/Chief of Police, through the Chain of Command, reports directly to the Deputy Chief of Police through the shift Sergeant/Lieutenant. 

Follows all legal directives and orders originating from the police administration, and adheres to the Rules of Conduct, Directives, Policies and Procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  1. Patrols the entire City of Ecorse, which may also include periodic foot patrols in some areas. Issues violations for traffic offenses and makes arrests when appropriate of persons who commit misdemeanors and felony crimes. 
  2. Writes incident reports, embraces community policing, and follows all legal orders and directives from superior officers. 
  3. Completes work in a timely manner and achieves the work goals and standards on a daily basis.
  4. Keep abreast of new laws, statistics and trend and inform staff of the changes.
  5. Completes daily and monthly logs and submits them to police Administration prior to deadline. Strict adherence to the rules of conduct and policies and procedures of the department.
  6. Receives constructive criticism without malice.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE

  • Law Enforcement – Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, and government regulations.
  • Customer Service – Thorough knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services. This includes setting and meeting quality standards for services to the citizens.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • JUDGMENT/DECISION MAKING – Evaluates the best methods then exercises appropriate judgment in establishing priorities and resolving complex matters.
  • Interpersonal Relationships – Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships with employees, coworkers, citizens and representatives from other law enforcement entities and organizations. Shares knowledge with staff for mutual and department benefit.

REQUIRED ABILITIES

  • Communication – Ability to communicate ideas effectively, including the preparation of reports and logs. Ability to listen and understand directions, information and ideas presented verbally and in writing. Ability to handle a variety of customer service issues with tact and diplomacy in a confidential manner.
  • Coordination of Work – Ability to plan and organize daily work routine. Able to blend patrol activities and entry level management (shift), for the smooth operation of the platoon. Prioritizes the completion of work in accordance with sound time – management practices. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be physically fit within proportionate height/weight requirements or pass a physical exam.
  • Have ability to exert moderate, though no constant physical effort.
  • Some lifting to include overhead lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling moderately heavy objects and materials.
  • May occasionally involve heavy objects and materials.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Perform coordinated movements.
  • Ability to distinguish colors and shades, listen and hear distinctive sounds.
  • Work may be performed indoors and outdoors in all types of weather, during the night, evening or nighttime hours. 
  • Corrected vision to 20/20

Pay/Salary:

The City of Ecorse offers competitive wages and benefits (including medical, dental and pension) for our officers, which includes lateral transfers for currently certified Police officers.

  • 1 year experience - $20.26 per hour/$42,979 annually
  • 2 years of experience - $22.10 per hour/$46,885 annually
  • 3 years of experience - $23.94 hourly/$50,792 annually
  • 4 years of experience - $25.78 hourly/$54,700 annually
  • 5 years of experience - $27.25 hourly/$57,804 annually
  • 6 years of experience - $28.71 hourly/$59,716 annually
  • One-time bonus of $1,500.00 upon completion of FTO period
