The City of Lapeer is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Chief of Police. The Chief of Police provides the leadership and management for the City of Lapeer Police Department. The City of Lapeer is the County seat of Lapeer County, has a resident population of approximately 9,000 and a daily serviceable population of approximately 25,000. The City of Lapeer is a vibrant progressive community providing modern 24/7 police response services. The 2022/23 Fiscal Year Budget for the Police Department is 4.1 million. The department has an authorized complement of twenty full-time sworn Officers, which includes five Patrol Sergeants, one Detective Sergeant, one Investigator, ten Patrol Officers, two School Resource Officers, one Administrative Assistant, one K9, one part-time Receptionist and one part-time Code Enforcement Officer. Sergeants and Officers are represented by the Police Officer Labor Council and Administrative Assistant is represented by Teamsters. The position of Chief of Police is an FLSA exempt non-union position serving as the Department Head under the direction and pleasure of the City Manager. 

A successful candidate will hold a bachelor's degree with coursework in criminal justice or public administration and/or a related field. Progressively responsible full-time command experience in police supervision/management within the previous twelve months prior to application date will be a requirement. An equivalent combination of education and command experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position may be considered. Advanced course work at the FBI National Academy, Staff and Command and/or similar Executive Management institution will be given consideration. 

Demonstratable communication and interpersonal skill experience in building effective working relationships within the community, within the police department and cross a city-wide organization are a requirement. Demonstratable skills related to; crisis management, policy implementation, budgeting, emergency management, contractual negotiations, human resources, employee discipline, media relations, event planning, resource allocation and community involvement are required. 

Applicants must be able to successfully complete; a comprehensive character and criminal background investigation, health screening, drug screening and possess or be able to obtain the following certifications and licenses:  Valid Michigan Operators License with acceptable driving history, Empowered MCOLES Certification, ICS 100, 200, 300 & 400, NIMS 700 & 800.
