The City of Potterville is accepting applications for a full-time position as a sworn Police Officer/ School Resource Officer. The position will include a focus on the Potterville Public School during normal school days. Scheduling will reflect that of the regular school day with additional opportunities for overtime during special events, sports, etc. related to the school. When school is not in session the position will be that of a regular road patrol officer. During school hours, the SRO will respond to emergencies in and outside of the school if necessary. 

The applicant for this position should have additional qualities that exceed a regular road patrol officer which are specifically directed towards working with children on a daily basis. This position will be boarded by both the Chief of Police, City Manager as well as the school Superintendent to ensure the proper candidate is selected. This position will require the applicant to attend additional training as directed by the Police Department and school administration that is directly related to the position.

Some of the duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide an atmosphere of open communication with the students at the high school, middle school and elementary school
  • Assist school officials with criminal investigations 
  • Work directly with school administration creating a safe environment for school staff and students
  • Respond to both emergency and non-emergency calls for service, including assisting local fire and EMS when needed
  • Respond to traffic crash scenes to provide medical aid, investigation and documentation as required
  • Provide non-criminal complaint services
  • Testify in court proceedings related to any criminal complaints
  • Schedule will consist of primarily weekday shifts, totaling 40 hours per week

  • Be licensed/ licensable by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) – YOU MUST HAVE COMPLETED A POLICE ACADEMY PRIOR TO APPLYING
  • Two years law enforcement experience preferred
  • High School Diploma, two years of college education or higher preferred
  • Undergo and pass medical fitness and drug screening to include marijuana
  • Pass an extensive background check
  • Be of good moral and ethical character
  • Possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver’s license
