The Ogemaw County Sheriff's Office is accepting applications for three full-time Deputy Sheriff vacancies.

STARTING SALARY:

Beginning Wage - $20.00, One Year $21.00, Two Years $22.50, Three Years $24.00 Four Years $25.00 and Five years $26.00. Lateral transfer for qualified MCOLES applicants with regard to pay only equal to years of experience is scaled for beginning wage entry level. Medical, dental and vision insurance effective date of hire.

DUTIES:

Not All-Inclusive - Responsible for protection of life and property through enforcement of laws. Patrol assigned areas, investigates, and makes arrest, direct and controls traffic, writes violation citations, prepares reports, appears in court, serves civil process, provides services and assistance to public, performs related work as assigned.

WORK HOURS:

  • 12 hour shifts with 80 hours pay period
  • Every other weekend off

COMPETITIVE APPLICANTS:

  • Must meet the following MCOLES standards: Currently licensed or considered "licensable" by MCOLES standards, currently enrolled in a MCOLES certified Police Academy or Police Certification Program with a projected graduation date. Any applicant who fails to comply with these requirements shall become ineligible (certification must be maintained throughout the term of the eligibility).
  • At least 21 years of age as of date of filing official application.
  • Must be a United States citizen.
  • Vision correctable to 20/20 with no major defects; normal color vision; normal hearing.
  • Able to pass any physical agility test required to determine physical fitness for the performance of duties of position to be filled.
  • No prior felony convictions.
  • Valid Michigan Driver License with good driving record. Out-of-state applicants must provide current driving record at time of application and obtain State of Michigan license within one month of employment.
  • Must have taken and passed the MCOLES Pre-employment Test (reading and writing test). Those who meet these criteria will be invited to an oral interview.

EVALUATION PROCESS:

Will consist of application review, in-person interview, background investigation, psychological evaluation, pre-employment physical and drug screen.

COUNTY DESCRIPTION:

Ogemaw County Covers 575 sq. miles, including 11 sq. miles of water and has an approximate population of 20,770 with 14 townships per the 2020 census. There are two city police departments and one MSP post within the county.  The county seat is the City of West Branch.  Major roadways in the county include I-75, M-33, M-55 and M-30.  Hunting, fishing and seasonal outdoor recreation are major attractions to the area.
