City of Traverse City: Police Social Worker Coordinator Closing Date: February 28, 2023

Under the general administrative direction of the Chief of the Police, the Police Social Worker Coordinator (PSWC) evaluates the needs of the community and social work services. The PSWC works to assess citizen needs, implementing treatment plans as appropriate to assist the client and families with problems such as homelessness, mental and chronic illness, substance abuse, job loss, poverty, personal and family adjustment, and criminal behavior. Works closely with the entire team of the Traverse City Police Department to supplement existing police services where appropriate. The PSWC supports the personnel of the police department through the Crisis Intervention and Peer Support Teams. Negotiates, coordinates, monitors, and evaluates services. The PSWC establishes relationships with community service providers by collaboration and connection to resources. The position requires a strong focus on assertive community outreach and interventions with the homeless population in Traverse City, Michigan. The incumbent must have the ability and skills necessary to work positively, friendly, and professionally with the public.

Work requires flexible hours, including after-hours assignments.

  • A Master's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, or related field is required from an accredited college/university and three to five years of related work experience, including assessing a diverse population's physical, mental, social, and economic needs.
  • A minimum of three years of experience (professional or paraprofessional) working with persons with mental illness is required or one academic year of graduate practicum/internship experience working with persons with mental illness required
  • Preferably, one year of experience in the following areas: clinical diagnostic assessment and evaluation of adults and children experiencing a behavioral health crisis, crisis intervention, brief counseling, and determining hospital eligibility.
  • Possession of an appropriate State of Michigan credential is required (LMSW, LLMSW, LLPC, LPC, LLP, FLP.) or must have applied for and be able to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Possession of valid state driver's license.
  • Working knowledge of police terminology and practices; working knowledge of City, state and federal law; working knowledge of the citizen’s rights; working knowledge of the laws of traffic, evidence, search and seizure

Residency requirement: 20-mile radius from nearest City limit.

This is an exempt nonunion position, with a pay classification Grade 5. Starting wage on scale is $62,647.07, additional compensation is dependent on qualifications and experience. Competitive benefits package. The complete job description can be reviewed at
