Summary

The Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS); Museum Security is a full-service public safety department that works to meet the needs of the University of Michigan community. Our officers are highly trained security professionals equipped to serve all members of our community. We manage all security operations for the Museum of Art, Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, the Museum of Natural History and may also provide security services for other university buildings and events. We offer an integrated customer service approach to safety and security, while protecting the assets of the museums. We provide a safe community while improving the quality of life for all those living, learning, working, and visiting our community. As a Museum Security Officer, you will report to the Director of Museum Security.

We are a seven (7) day per week operation with 24/7 responsibilities. Work schedules may include weekends, afternoons, holidays, and unanticipated overtime. This is a uniformed position following the DPSS uniformed dress code. There will be both stationery and foot patrol assignments and building specific responsibilities.

Responsibilities*

  • You will ensure public safety, protect our assets and act as the primary liaison with state and local police, fire, and security agencies.
  • Act calmly in emergency situations and use emergency equipment.
  • Detect safety hazards and criminal activity.
  • Patrol museums and grounds to identify safety hazards and criminal activity
  • Conduct investigations and prepare reports.
  • Provide security and customer service for Museum events and traffic and crowd control for special events.
  • Respectfully communicate and work with all staff and community members.
  • Enforce University regulations and security procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters.

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • You have 6 months security related experience including enforcing fire, safety, and security procedures.
  • Can assist emergency response personnel with maneuvering persons who may be combative, intoxicated, or unconscious; can restrain someone.
  • Skillset in handling emergency situations and using associated equipment
  • You can perform life saving techniques such as CPR and First Aid.
  • A valid driver's license and a driving record with less than 6 points.
  • You must pass a background investigation, drug screening, psychological evaluation, and physical examination.

All members of the DPSS team are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. As such, you are required to report offenses that come to your attention.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Police Officers Association of Michigan union, which contains and settles all matters concerning wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

PAY RANGE INFORMATION

The pay range for new Security Officers is $19.86 to $20.26

The full salary range ($19.86 - $24.13) can be found in the POAM bargaining agreement.
