City of Mason: Police Officer Closing Date: November 17, 2022

The City of Mason has an opportunity for a community based full-time Police Officer.  Under the supervision of a Police Sergeant: a sworn law enforcement officer performs a broad range of police activities.  A person in this position is responsible for serving the public through the knowledgeable enforcement of state laws and local ordinances.  A police officer has general responsibilities to maintain order, regulate traffic, protect life and property, prevents crime and disorder; and to perform related work as required. A police officer will typically perform basic patrol and investigative tasks but may be directed to complete special assignments or tasks. 

The ideal candidates must possess a valid Michigan Operators License, have good moral character, having never been convicted of a felony or serious traffic offense.  The City of Mason will consider the following three avenues in becoming a Police Officer for the City of Mason.

  • Previously employed and sworn police officer candidates:  Must have completed at least 60 semester hours of course work at an accredited college or university or have a commensurate amount of related work experience.
  • Non-sworn and non-sponsored candidates:  Must have completed or in the process of completing an accredited police academy and have a minimum of an associate's degree.  
  • Non-sworn and City sponsored candidates:  Must be able to commence attendance at an accredited police academy within six (6) months of offer of employment and be able to obtain an associate's degree within two (2) years from being sworn in as a police officer.  

Why the City of Mason you ask? The City of Mason does many things that help our employees and set ourselves apart from other employers and here are just a few.  We have a MERS defined benefit retirement with a low employee contribution of 4.5%.  We offer an insurance buyout of Single:  $2,400 a year, 2-Person - $5,300 a year, and Family:  $6,200 a year.  That's over $200 extra per pay period for a family if you have benefits elsewhere.  We offer twelve (12) weeks off parental leave with the city compensating nine (9) weeks and the employee only having to use three (3) weeks of their own time.  We have a fixed 12-hour shift schedule.  Officers get an extra 88-hour check in November for working holidays.  Officers are supplied with a Glock 45 cal handgun and rifle.  We have a rotating detective assignment with a pay increase.  We have a K9 assignment.  Every officer has their own workstation with a computer.

In addition, The City of Mason offers a starting annual salary between $40,824.92 - $55,840.73, depending on education and experience per Collective Bargaining agreement as well as the opportunity for overtime.  We have excellent medical, prescription, dental, vision and life insurance plans.  Medical and dependent care flexible spending accounts, educational support via tuition reimbursement, professional training and development.  We offer vacation, sick, personal, paid family leave and volunteer paid time off.

Please note that the City of Mason's policy is that all employees must live within 20 linear miles of the boundaries of the City of Mason within 12 months of the date or hire.
