Job Summary:

Manage Animal Services & Enforcement (ASE) operations to protect the community from animal problems and diseases. Protect pets that have strayed or been abandoned, enforce State laws and ordinances, manage animal shelters, sell dog licenses, and educate the public on animal care and safety.

Responsibilities   

  • Directly manage employees in ASE to maintain communication and an efficiently run department.
  • Balance and run budget within established policies and procedures, evaluating costs and revenues.
  • Handle citizen complaints of service and complicated animal problems, and respond to questions of state and local laws and department policies as an authority.
  • Reviews and manages felony investigations of animal cruelty or neglect, coordinating needed resources for the housing of confiscated animals.
  • Create and maintain a department Policy and Procedure Manual
  • Promote programs that increase adoption and spay/neuter rates, lower euthanasia rates, and educate the community about the laws and responsible pet ownership.
  • Work with regional Animal Control officers and local law enforcement agencies on disaster preparedness and mutual aid. 

Qualifications:

Education:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Criminal Justice, Public or Business Administration, or Animal Related Sciences or military equivalent.

Experience:

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in a supervisory position with experience in regulatory/compliance in law enforcement matters is preferred. Considerable problem-solving skills, especially in dealing with angry and upset people. Basic understanding of domestic animals. Reliable transportation and a valid Michigan driver's license are required. State-certified in euthanasia through a licensed veterinarian, recognized by the Michigan Department of Agriculture, and State or National certification as an Animal Control Officer through the National Animal Control Association or the Michigan Department of Agriculture preferred with the requirement to obtain within the first year of employment in this position.
